ABBIE YAN SAWYER
Heyo, I'm Abbie — a queer Chinese American photographer based in Brooklyn, NY.
A lot of my work is a reflection of my experiences and perspectives, shaped by my upbringing, my surroundings, and the people who've moved through my life. Photography is like a third eye for me. It forces me to slow down and notice the moments most people walk past — the quiet ones, the small ones, the ones that somehow say everything.

Photography is also my form of grounding. There's something about picking up a camera that brings me back to myself — present, observant, still.
Funnily enough, I'm also a Master of Social Work student on my way to becoming a therapist, and I think that's no coincidence. Photography was my first form of therapy. It taught me how to sit with a moment, to really look at it, before moving on. I'm endlessly grateful to have found this outlet — and honestly, I think it found me.
My two practices are more connected than they might seem. Social work is rooted in human connection, in showing up for people with care and intention — and that's exactly what I try to bring behind the lens. Both ask me to listen before I look.
